[Also in Division A4] In a street-sweeping machine, comprising outwardly flaring side brushes 32 and rubbersoled guide shoes 36, defining a path P to be swept by a brush 20 which deposits dirt particles on a wall 30 for transference by cleats 28 of an endless conveyor belt to a hopper, parts A of the path are swept by inclined brush filaments which, on release from contact with the surface to be swept flick dirt particles forwardly and toward the centre of the brush. The brush consists of a cylindrical, rotated core 41 adjustable in height relatively to the path P by a chain 23 and having end faces 40 with stub axles 46 each received in a slot 47 in a support 21 pivoted at 22 on a chassis 19, and a helical brush strip 49 having folded brush filaments 53 retained by a strip 54 in a channelsection base 50 secured to the core, the filaments being directed by side walls 52 which are progressively inclined, from a direction normal to the surface of the core at the central portion, towards the end of the core nearer thereto, so that end filaments project beyond the end faces 40 and end parts thereof are flexed rearwardly and outwardly to sweep the parts A. The brush filaments are of natural or synthetic fibres and may include a mixture of hard and soft fibres. The end filaments may contact the inner surface of the guide 36 to provide a concentration of filaments in the parts A and, in modifications, the filaments are additionally, at an angle to the radius of the core to provide a rake in the direction of movement, and/or in the opposite direction, of the core.
