Abstract

1,251,609. Hardened light-sensitive silver halide material. AGFA-GEVAERT A.G. June 2, 1970 [June 4, 1969], No.26514/70. Heading G2C. A photographic material comprises at least one light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer and at least one protective layer in which the protective layer contains formaldehyde and/or glyoxal, as a hardener, and one or more of the emulsion layers contain, as hardener, one or more compounds which contain two expoxide groups e.g. a diglycidyl ether, bis-(2,3-epoxypropyl)ethylamine, ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether, diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether, the diglycidyl ester of phthalic acid and 2, 4, 6-triglycidyl cyanurate. The emulsion layers and the protective layer both preferably comprise gelatine as a binder. The molar ratio of formaldehyde or glyoxal to expoxides is preferably between 5 : 1 and 1 : 5. Preferably 0À1 to 1À5g of epoxide is used per 100g of gelatine in an emulsion which is ready for casting, and 0À6 to Sg of formaldehydes per 100g of gelatine protective layer. Using this invention a mechanically firm layer which undergoes only a small amount of swelling without causing any significant loss in sensitivity and gradation. The permeability to U.V. light is not impaired and the layer may be applied rapidly, i.e. in a very concentrated form.
