Mineral oils are recovered from water or the earth by distributing peat and/or lignite on the surface and recovering the peat and/or lignite with absorbed mineral oil. The peat and/or lignite may be pulverized; coated with a surface film of silicon or mixed with an insoluble binder e.g. pitch, and may be contained in an envelope allowing passage of water polluted with mineral oil.
