Abstract

[Also in Division C1] Pattern follower apparatus for following the periphery of a pattern such as pattern 66 of a glass cutting and grinding machine in which sensing means 140 cutting tool 128 and grinding wheel 117 are all vertically aligned and mounted on U member 123 for movement controlled by motor 134 in an arc about axis 119 and towards or away from the pattern 66 by means of cylinder 114, comprises as the sensing means 140, first and second photo-cells or light sensing means 141, 142, on other sensors each having an output proportional to the position relative to the periphery 143 of the pattern 66, which may be of aluminium, thick paper or other suitable material, white one side of line 143 and black the other, means to sense the difference in output for the sensors 141, 142 for controlling the movement of the sensors in an arc about axis 119 to maintain the sensors at a predetermined constant angle relative to the periphery 143 and means for moving them towards and away from the periphery 143 responsive to the output of one of the sensors 142. The apparatus forms part of one embodiment disclosed in Specifications 1,251,364, 1,251,365, 1,251,366, 1,251,367, 1, 251,368 and 1, 251,369.
