A transfer device 10 for transferring pieces of tobacco sheet 26 (or leaf) from a supply location to a rolling or wrapping location in a cigar-making machine, comprises a perforated suction plate 34 for securing the sheet 26 (or leaf) to the device 10, a paste roller 40 mounted adjacent one edge of the suction plate 34 for contact with the sheet 26 (or leaf) carried by the plate 34, means for supplying paste to the roller 40 and means for rotating the roller 40 to transfer paste to the sheet 26 (or leaf). A continuous reconstituted tobacco sheet 12 is intermittently fed from a reel 21 between plates 23, 24, and is cut off by a knife 25 to form a sheet 26 of sufficient length to form a single bunch binder. The perforated plate 34 forms one side of a suction chamber 33 which, together with a paste chamber 50 and bearings (41, 41') supporting the roller 40, is mounted ultimately to a cranked arm 11 for pivotal movement about a point (not shown) to transfer the sheet 26 held by the plate 34 through approximately 90‹ in the direction of the arrow 13 into a substantially horizontal position on a cigar bunch rolling apron (not shown). Paste is fed to the chamber 50 via flexible tubing 53. A knurled drive wheel (65) is connected via a clutch (66) to the shaft (64) of the roller 40 and this wheel (65), during the first part only of the pivoting movement of the device 10, engages an arcuate rolling surface 62 of a block 61 supported by an L-section bracket 60 and biassed upwardly by a leaf spring 63. Engagement of the wheel (65) with the surface 62 causes the roller 40 to rotate and to apply paste along a line across the cut-off sheet 26, in the area indicated by the arrow 70, until the wheel (65) runs off the end of the surface 62. As the sheet 26 is deposited on the rolling apron, suction is cut off from the chamber 33 and is applied to perforations in the apron to pull the sheet off the roller 40. On the return stroke of the device 11, the clutch (66) disconnects the driving wheel 65 from the roller 40 to prevent the latter from being rotated when the wheel 65 against contacts the surface 62.
