Abstract

1,251,145. Sweeping machines. G. H. TENNANT CO. 10 April, 1969 [11 April, 1968], No. 18487/69. Heading E1G. [Also in Division A4] In a surface cleaning machine comprising a hopper for receiving material swept by a surface cleaning implement a part of the bottom wall of the hopper, adjacent the entrance therein for swept material, is pivotable about a transverse axis between a position permitting swept material to pass into the hopper and a position in which it substantially closes said entrance. The hopper 18 of a mobile sweeping machine receives material swept by a brush 14 and has at its inlet 23 a section 28 pivotable about an axis 34. During the sweeping operation the section 28 is normally positioned as shown in Fig. 1 with a flexible strip 33 at its rear edge engaging the surface to be cleaned. But when it is desired to displace any material collected adjacent the hopper inlet 23 a linkage 52, 53 is actuated by a hydraulic device 46 to pivot the section 28 about the axis 34 to throw such material forwardly.into the hopper. The hydraulic device 46 may also set the section 28 in a position to close the hopper inlet 23 for retaining the swept material in the hopper whilst it is lifted by hydraulically actuated arms 57 and tilted over a receptacle, into which the hopper contents can then be dumped by releasing the section 28.
