Abstract

1,251,089. Automatic force control. HEALD MACHINE CO. Feb. 28, 1969 [March 4, 1968], No. 10893/69. Heading G3R. The transverse force on a rotary spindle carrying an abrasive grinding wheel is measured and compared with a desired force in an electrical system controlling a hydraulic actuator which automatically corrects deviations from the desired force. In Fig. 1, an abrasive wheel 21 mounted on a cross-slide 14 is rotated to grind internally a workpiece 13 which is mounted on a head 12 for rotation and axial movement. The bending force on grinding wheel spindle 19 is measured by an electrical inductive proximity transducer in a bridge circuit detecting lateral movement of a bronze collar on the spindle. The signal from the gauge is compared with a signal representing the desired force so that any error is effective through a hydraulic servosystem 25, 15 to control the transverse position of cross-slide 14 and thereby restore to the force to the desired value. Movement of the slide is damped by a dashpot 22. The desired value signal may be varied according to a programme determined by a punched card associated with a digital computer. This signal is also applied to control a motor 23 adjusting the position of spindle 19 above a pivot 17 so that the axis of wheel 21 is maintained parallel to the axis of the workpiece despite variations of force on the grinding wheel. A relay is operated to terminate grinding by a predetermined voltage from an inductive transducer 16 detecting the transverse position of the cross-slide. This voltage is modified by the voltage from the proximity gauge so that the finished size is independent of the grinding force.
