Abstract

1,249,742. Dentifrice preparations. COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO. 14 Jan., 1970 [5 Aug., 1969], No. 39175/69. Heading A5B. Dentifrice preparations contain as a polishing agent at least 30% by weight of a waterinsoluble crystalline silica having particles of sizes up to 5 microns, a mean particle size of up to 1.1 microns and a surface area of up to 50,000 cm<SP>2</SP>/gm. homogeneously distributed throughout and in contact with the other components of the dentifrice. The water-insoluble crystalline silica may be the sole polishing agent or a minor amount of another polishing agent such as dicalcium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate, sodium metaphosphate, aluminium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate, calcium pyrophosphate, calcium sulphate, polymethyl methacrylate and/or bentonite may also be present. The dentifrice may also comprise water, humectants, binders, gelling agents, flavours, sweeteners, colouring or whitening agents, preservatives, silicones, chlorophyll compounds, ammoniated materials such as urea and diammonium phosphate, anionic, cationic, nonionic and ampholytic surface active agents, cationic antibacterial agents, e.g. 1, 6-di-(p-chlorophenyl biguanido) hexane particularly in the form of a fluoride especially dihydrogen fluoride salt, and/or a fluorine-containing compound such as sodium fluoride, stannous fluoride, potassium fluoride, potassium stannous fluoride and/or stannous chlorofluoride.
