Abstract
1,249,663. Welding by fusion. INSTITUT FUR SCHIFFBAU. 18 Dec., 1968, No. 60212/68. Heading B3R. In performing horizontal fillet welds in compartments for, e.g., ships' hulls, a compartment floor 5, Fig. 1, is supported and levelled on a frame 4 and side walls 6 defining a plurality of chambers are clamped thereto by corner clamps 1. Hydraulic rams 2, 3 are arranged below the frame 4 for urging the floor 5 and walls 6 closely together. A welding head comprising four torches 14, Fig. 3, is pivoted to a telescopic column 13 forming part of a welding apparatus 8 movable along a gantry 7 which includes an operator's seat 9, a control panel 10 and a welding current source 11. A pair of torches are positioned in two corners of a chamber, and the apparatus 8 moved along the gantry to produce a fillet weld extending to the centre of each joint to be welded. The welding head is then pivoted to position the other pair of torches in the other two corners of the chamber, and movement of the apparatus 8 back along the gantry 7 causes the seams to be completed with slight overlap at the centres. The other opposite sides of the chamber are then welded in a similar manner after rotating the welding head through 90 degrees. In this manner the side walls 6 are fillet-welded to the floor 5 in each chamber.
