Abstract

1,249,626. Mirrors. ROTHERHAM & SONS Ltd. Jan. 17, 1969 [Oct. 20, 1967], No. 47837/67. Heading C7F. A mirror is made by forming a transparent plastics body having surfaces defining the front and back surfaces of the mirror, the said surfaces being formed to have a required optical surface finish and inter-relationship thereby to avoid a separate surface finishing operation after the forming of the body, transferring the body to a vacuum-deposition chamber with minimum delay and handling between forming the body and placing it in said chamber, thereby to avoid the need for cleaning the surfaces of the body, introducing argon gas into the chamber to prevent contamination of the surfaces of the body, and then vacuumdepositing a reflective metallic layer on to the back surface of the body. The plastics may be polymethylmethacrylate or polystyrene, and may be destaticized in O 3 prior to the coating step. The coating may be of Al; the coated body may be annealed at 70‹ -90‹C. for 3 to 7 hours, and the coating may be protected by a resin-based lacquer pigmented with Al oxides.
