Abstract

1,249,625. Measuring borehole inclination electrically. SOIL MECHANICS Ltd. Feb. 24, 1969 [Nov.23, 1967], No.38772/67. Heading G1N. A borehole inclinometer to measure differential slippage of earth strata comprises a chain of inductive transducers, 10, which chain is centred in an initially vertical borehole 4, by springs 18, so that earth movement imposes a curvature on the chain. The transducer comprises a rigid rod, 6, connected by a rigid bar, 12, to a coaxial component 11, the disposition of which component is sensed by quadrilaterally disposed components 14 inductively coupled to that, 11. The components 14 are arranged in two pairs to sense displacement along each of two perpendicular axes normal to that of the borehole. A signal from the transducer is fed to terminal equipment 15 at the mouth of the borehole by means of wires 16 which signal is decoded to provide a reading of the angular displacement of the axis of a rod relative to that of an adjacent one. Such signals are summed to indicate the overall bore curvature and hence the extent of earth slippage. The component 11 is flexibly connected to the adjacent rod by a flexible bar, 13, or, Fig. 3, (not shown), by two rigid bars (13a) and a universal joint (17). The components 14 are supported on a tubular extension, 8, which is joined to that, 7, by a flexible bellows 9. Each transducer includes two ferrite pot cores.
