Abstract

1,249,466. Making combustible gas. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 6 Feb., 1969 [4 March, 1968], No. 10286/68. Heading C5E. A fuel gas is made by reacting a hydrocarbon feed with steam, and optionally with CO 2 and/or H 2 , over a two-part catalyst bed in an externally heated tubular reformer, the first part of the catalyst comprising a Pt group metal substantially free of alkali metal compounds, and of base metals having steam reforming activity, and the second part comprising a base metal, e.g. Ni, for steam-reforming. The base metal should also be free of alkali metal compounds. The first part may be the catalyst described in Specification 1,211,847, and may comprise more than one Pt group metal. Its activity may be increased downstream. Both parts of the catalyst should be of low silica content, and contain a promoter, e.g. an alkaline earth metal compound, and the base metal may include a Pt group metal, e.g. in the range 0À01 to 5% b.w. Feedstocks include straight-run distillates, LPG, and refinery gases, and should be preheated. Conventional reaction conditions are maintained. The process may be applied to the second stage of the process described in Specification 1,032,753 and 1,102,801. In two examples, the Pt group metal is Ir and Ru.
