Abstract

1,249,456. Superconductor devices. MESSERSCHMITT-BOLKOW-BLOHM G.m.b.H. 10 Feb., 1970 [17 Feb., 1969], No. 6443/70. Heading H1K. [Also in Division H3] A device for generating electric pulses on a superconductor loop comprises a coil for driving a portion of the loop normal, the loop on both sides of this portion being provided with insulated signal input and output layers and a signal source connected to the input layers. As shown, Fig. 1, the ends of a loop 10 of Type II superconductor material are joined by a strip, preferably of Type I superconductor material provided with signal input conductors 30, 31 of Type I or II superconductor material and signal output conductors 35, 36 preferably of Type I superconductor material. A coil 33 is provided which when energized drives the central portion of the strip normal. In operation the signal source 32 energizes the coil 33 and applies current pulses I to input conductors 31, 30 which generate magnetic fields H 1 , H 2 which induce current pulses Is 1 and Is 2 with associated magnetic fields H 3 and H 4 in the loop. Since the coil 33 drives the centre of the strip normal the current pulses Is 1 and Is 2 move outwards and the coil 33 is then de-energized to allow the centre of the strip to return to the superconductive state. The current pulses propagate round the loop 10 at approximately the speed of light and when they pass the strip again they generate output pulses I M in the output conductors 35, 36. The output pulses are analysed to determine movements of the system by the Sagnac effect. The strip may be of Pb or Sn vapour deposited on a quartz substrate and separated from the input and output conductors by layers 23, 24, 21 and 22 of insulating material. The strip may also be of a type II or III superconductor material.
