Abstract
1,249,308. Centrifugal and axial-flow pumps. QUALCAST Ltd. April 14, 1969 [May 8, 1968], No.21875/68. Heading F1C. [Also in Division H1] A centrifugal impeller filter device 40, driven by motor 46 via shaft 51, for circulating and filtering electrolyte through a storage battery, comprises a hollow rotor 56 mounted coaxially on drive-shaft 51 which carries an impeller blade 62 at one end and supported for rotation within casing 52, rotor 56 having a frustro-conical portion 58 provided internally with a deflector strip 59 in the form of a spiral helix and being arranged to receive at its wider end electrolyte carrying dispersed solid matter from the battery, and to deliver from its narrower end electrolyte carrying coagulated solid matter. During operation the whole of rotor 56 with sleeve 63 which is coaxial with shaft 51 rotates rapidly abouts its axis and electrolyte flowing into rotor 56 through ports 69 is accelerated outwards by impeller blades 62. Solid matter then coagulates and collects against the walls of rotor 56 and is transported into outlet pipe 54 by the action of the helical deflector strip 59. The mixture of electrolyte and coagulated solid particles is pumped by impeller device 40 from outlet pipe 54 into a header tank.
