Abstract
1,249,231. Dry cleaning process. J. C. PENNY CO. Inc. 10 March, 1969 [17 Feb., 1969], No. 12473/69. Heading D1P. Natural and synthetic materials are dry cleaned by a) contacting the soiled article with a cleanser impregnated pulverised granular carrier e.g. sawdust or corncob dust in a sealed chamber b) agitating the cleanser and article to effect removal of soil c) separating the cleansing agent from the article. The cleansing agent may be removed by circulating warm air (110-120‹F) around the chamber which may agitated during the separation stage. Apparatus includes an hermetically sealable chamber 11, closable by a door (16) Fig. 2, not shown, within which a cylindrical perforated drum 17 is rotatably mounted on a substantially horizontal drive shaft (18), a blower 30 having an inlet in the chamber and a filter 41. A heating coil 45 regulates the temperature within the chamber. In operation an hermetically sealable bag e.g. of polyethylene is filled with the soiled articles, the cleanser, and sufficient air to bolster the articles during agitation. The bag is placed inside the drum which is rotated for the required time. The drum is stopped and the contents of the bag are emptied into it and it is again rotated. The blower and heater act together in removing the cleansing agent, the carrier being collected at the filter and the vaporised solvent being exhausted for disposal or reuse.
