Abstract

1,249,203. Battery charging circuits. INTERNATIONAL RECTIFIER CO. (GREAT BRITAIN) Ltd. 9 April, 1970 [11 Feb., 1969], No. 7310/69. Heading H2H. A battery charging circuit for an automobile comprises an A.C. generator 10, a solid state rectifier 11 supplying a D.C. load via a fuse 12 and a voltage regulating by-pass circuit 14 which prevents the voltage across the rectifier from exceeding a safe level thereby protecting the rectifier against damage by an over voltage caused by the blowing of the fuse due to a fault. In the event of the fuse blowing the open circuit voltage of the three phase alternator 10 rises to a high level and a Zener diode 19 triggers a thyristor 15. The by-pass circuit thus constitutes a load across the rectifier output thereby protecting the rectifier diodes from an over voltage.
