The invention relates to a process for the preparation of bis (mercaptophenyl) ethers of the general formula in which bis-substituted mercaptophenyl ethers of in which R 1 and R 2 are the same or different and are selected from a C 1 -C 4 alkyl, cycloalkyl or an aralkyl radical and in which rings A and B may be substituted or unsubstituted, is split using an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal in the presence of liquid ammonia or an amine or using an alkali metal hydride or an alkali metal amide in the presence of an N-containing heterocyclic compound.
