Abstract

1,248,412. Respiratory appliances. ROBERTSHAW CONTROLS CO. 22 Nov., 1968 [24 Nov., 1967], No. 55601/68. Heading AST. An oxygen-air diluter for breathing apparatus comprises an oxygen inlet 12, an air inlet 64, an outlet 14 to the user, a variable flow nozzle 18 delivering a jet of oxygen into a venturi 22 and entraining air with it, said nozzle having a movable valve member 24 controlled by means responsive to demand at the outlet. Air inlet from the atmosphere is controlled by a flexible valve disc 56, the maximum extent of opening of the valve 56 being limited by an aneroid bellows 52, in response to atmospheric pressure. The means controlling the valve member 24 comprises a flexible diaphragm 26, with a bleed port 28, and exposed on one side to the inlet oxygen, and on the other to a bleed chamber 30 which has an orifice 32 controlled by a flapper valve 34 such that when the orifice 32 is open oxygen leaves the bleed chamber 30 faster than it enters through the bleed port 28, creating a pressure difference across the diaphragm 26 which moves valve member 24 up to allow oxygen to flow through the nozzle. Pressure at the outlet is communicated by a port 45 to a chamber 36 on one side of a diaphragm 44, the other side of which is exposed to the atmosphere through a port 49. Diaphragm 44 has a button 38 fixed to its centre. When the user breathes in the pressure drops in chamber 36 forcing diaphragm 44 down so that button 38 actuates the flapper valve, and hence the valve member 24 rises. Air enters through slots 64 in a cylindrical wall of a housing 60. An aneroid bellows is mounted on the atmospheric side of diaphragm 44 such that its movable end abuts on the centre of diaphragm 44 so that as atmospheric pressure drops the diaphragm is pressed down to increase the amount of oxygen delivered.
