Smoke is flavoured by the addition to tobacco, tobacco substitute, or filter material of a compound of the general formula in which R denotes -CHO, -CH 2 -CHO, -(CH 2 ) 2 -CHO, -CO-CH 3 , -CO-CH 2 -CH 3 , -CO-CHO, -CH 2 CO-CHO, -CO -CO-CH 3 , -CH 2 OH, -(CH 2 ) 2 OH, -OH OH-CH 2 -CH 3 , -CO-(CH 2 ) 3 OH, -CO -CHOH-CH 3 , or -CO-COO-C 2 H 5 . Specific compounds referred to are 2 - formylpyrrol; pyrryl - 2 - oarbinol; pyrryl - 2 - methyl ketone; pyrryl - 2 - ethylketone; pyrryl - 2 -yhydroxypropylketone; 1 - (pyrryl - 2) - 2, 2 - diethoxypropanone - 1; 1 - (pyrryl - 2) -propandione - 1, 2; 1 - (pyrryl - 2) -propanone - 1 - 01 - 2; methyl pyrryl - 2 - carboxylate; ethyl pyrryl - 2 - glyoxylate. The additive may be applied by dipping or spraying using voltatile solvents.
