Abstract

124,825. Davison, S. M. April 27, 1916. Rod vibrators.-An electro-magnetically-operated submarine sounder has a series of reed-like rods of similar pitch, set round the circumference of a cylinder, or a cylindrical tube may be slotted to form a series of reeds. The reeds, if of magnetic material, may be operated directly; or, if of non-magnetic material, soft-iron laminµ are attached to the reeds. Fig. 1 shows a half vertical section in which reeds 31 are mounted in front of a corresponding number of laminar cores 11 spaced by wedges. The cores are magnetized by a coil 26, through which alternating currents are passed corresponding in alternations to the pitch of the reeds. An inflatable rubber ring 28 is arranged behind the reeds to act as a damper, and the reeds may be enclosed by a rubber &c. sheath 30 to prevent access of water. Suitably tuned resonators may be arranged behind the reeds. Coils carrying alternating currents may be attached to the reeds, the internal ring forming a permanent magnetic field.
