Abstract
1,248,197. Micro-biological testing. ABBOTT LABORATORIES. Feb. 3, 1970 [Feb. 3, 1969], No. 5218/70. Heading C6F. An apparatus for the detection and quantification of bacteria in a suspected sample e.g. urine, includes the following four media: I. an enriched dextrose medium (ensures growth of all urinary tract pathogens and indicates catalase reactions and dextrose fermentation, II. eosin methylene blue agar medium containing lactose (inhibits growth of Gram-positive bacteria and indicates lactose fermentation), III. urea-gelatine medium (indicates micro-biological production of urease and gelatinase) and IV. citrate medium (citrate utilization). Formulations for these media are given. The individual media, measuring 1" by 1¢", may be arranged in a box 10, Figs. 1 and 2, with a cover 15 which will lock in the upright position during inoculation. The applicator 20 by which the example is applied to the media has a cotton wick and rayon sleeve. Counting of bacteria is facilitated by grid squares marked on the base of the compartments. After incubation and growth of the bacteria the catalase test may be carried out by adding a few drops of 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide to medium I. Similarly, the gelatinase test may be made by the addition of mercuric chloride reagent to medium III.
