Abstract

1,248,152. Control of A.C. motors; inductor alternators. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 30 May, 1969, No. 27646/69. Headings H2A and H2J. A dynamo-electric machine co-operates with commutator 14 which supplies signals representing the speed and position of rotor 16 to a converter 18 associated with a power source 20. The converter 18 co-relates the commutator signal with a control signal from speed controller 22, and sets up fixed and travelling magnetic waves in field 24 and stator 26 respectively. The frequency of the input voltage to the stator 26 is adjusted so that the stator and field waves are stationary with respect to each other and separated by a predetermined phase angle, whereby the machine develops a desired torque. The power source 20 comprises a D.C. source 30 connected through oscillator 32, which provides a square wave output, to the commutator 14. Pulses from the commutator are rectified and shaped by bridge 56 receiving power from regulator 58 which operates to provide reduced voltage to the stator windings at decreased speeds of the machine. The regulator 58 generates pulses at a rate proportional to a command signal from the controller 22 through circuit 60 associated with current sensor 70. When the current fed to the stator 26 reaches a critical level, the output to the commutator 14 is reduced. The commutator signal is also applied to a pulse generator 72 connected to a converter 74 which delivers a speed-indicating signal to a differential amplifier 76. The latter also receives the speed command signal, the error signal driving a converter 80 feeding a field current regulator 82. A speed indicator 86 is provided. The converter 18 thus receives the commutator signal to maintain the stator field in step with the rotor field and leading it by a constant phase angle. The stator frequency is automatically maintained at a value proportional to rotor speed. The commutator comprises a primary field winding establishing a field between poles 40 and rotor 42 which is coupled to the rotor of the machine. A series of trains of pulses, each train being followed by a period of substantially zero voltage, is induced in secondary coils 46. The rotor 42 comprises a magnetic portion 50 and a non-magnetic portion 52. The pulses which are induced in the coils 46 are fed to the converter 18.
