Abstract

1,247,992. Laminated membranes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 June, 1969 [18 June, 1968], No. 30054/69. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B1 and B2] A membrane comprising particles 3 permeable to ions and/or molecules and embedded in a plastics foil 4, Fig. 3 (not shown), is formed by coating a substrate 1, e.g. glass, with a tacky substance 2, scattering the particles on the tacky substance, applying over the particles a coating of a plastics substance to form the foil and subsequently removing a portion of the surface of the plastics coating to expose the particles or applying only a sufficiency of the plastics substance to ensure such exposure, and removing the membrane from the substrate and tacky substance. The particles 3 may be of an ion exchange material and the tacky substance 2 isoprene rubber. The plastics material of the foil 4 may be a polyester, polycarbonate, polyurethane, polyesterimide, polyimide, polyamideimide, or polystyrene resin which may be hardened by heat treatment after application to the particles 3. The portion of the surface of the plastics coating may be removed by etching or saponification. Layers of a synthetic foam or a nylon, glass fibre or metal gauze may be provided on one or each side of the membrane.
