Abstract

124,789. Schneider, E. March 28, 1916. Mines, marine.-Relates to automatically anchored mines in which the mine and the anchor both sink to the sea-bottom at first, and the mine afterwards rises to the desired depth under the control of a hydrostatic device. According to the invention, all the control devices are arranged on the anchor, the hydrostatic device acting in conjunction with a balanced lever subjected to a moment of force increasing proportionately to the length of anchor cable paid out. As shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the cable b<3>, on its way from the drum B to the mine C, passes round a pulley E driving a screw spindle e<5> through gearing e<3>, e<4>, a nut F being thereby displaced along the spindle e<5> proportionally to the length of cable paid out. The nut F is guided by a slideway f<1> and carries a bell-crank lever f<2>; one arm of this lever is connected to a spring f<5> adjusted by a nut f<8>, and the other arm has a roller f<4> which bears against, and travels along, the arm G of a lever G, G<1>. This lever is fulcrumed at g<1> and balanced by a weight g<5>, and is connected at g<3> to the stem of a hydrostatic piston K. The nut F is first adjusted so that the distance of the roller f<4> on the arm G from the fulcrum g<1> corresponds to the depth of submersion desired. Then, when the mine is laid and rises from the anchor, the roller f<4> is moved farther away from the fulcrum by the rotation of the pulley E until its pressure overbalances the lever G this deflects a spring catch d<2> and releases a spring pawl D, which thereupon locks the drum B. The drum is held immovable before laying, and its speed is controlled during the paying-out operation by a brake in a bearing b<2>. The lever G, G<1> is normally locked by a nut b<5> on a screw-threaded part f<7> of the spindle of the drum, and is unlocked after the drum has made a few revolutions and paid out a given short length of cable.
