Abstract

1,247,861. Bleaching phosphate rock; ceramics. ALBRIGHT & WILSON (MFG.) Ltd. 10 Jan., 1969 [12 Jan., 1968], No. 1939/68. Headings C1A and C1J. Pelletized phosphate rock having a low chromium and iron content, is bleached by treatment with H 3 PO 4 in order to adjust the molar CaO : P 2 O 5 ratio to 3À0-3À3 : 1, and with H 2 SO 4 (50 to 150 grammes per litre of H 3 PO 4 ) the mixture being calcined in the presence of water vapour. The chromium content is preferably below 45 p.p.m. and the iron content below 0À2% by weight. The process may be carried out between 1200‹ and 1350‹ C. and the calciner imparts relative motion to the particles therein. The iron content of the rock may be reduced by pretreatment with sulphurous acid. A ceramic composition comprises 50% of the phosphate rock, 25% china clay and 25% Cornish stone or feldspar and flint.
