Abstract

1,247,725. Treating garments. MANN MFG. Inc. 19 Sept., 1968 [22 Sept., 1967], No. 44647/68. Heading A3V. A method of increasing the wear resistance of a textile fabric 10 includes the steps of adhering a thermoplastic film 18 to one surface of the fabric by the application of heat and pressure, cooling the film and fabric and then baking them in an oven at 275‹F to 450‹F for 8 to 20 minutes. The thermoplastic film 18 is applied to the inner surface 20 of the fabric 10 which may be woven, knitted or otherwise formed as by crocheting, such as at the interior surface of the knees (28) Fig. 3 (not shown) of a pair of slacks (30), by heat and pressure. A suitable thermoplastic film is a vinyl chloride acrylate or a phenolic ethyl acrylate polymer. The film 18 is 2 or 3 mils thick and has a suitable release paper adhered to one surface. The film may be applied by utilizing a pair of heated porous platens (32) (34) Fig. 4 (not shown) which allow the escape of any gas evolved. The release paper is stripped off and the fabric cooled to room temperature by a stream of air or by a cryogenic or refrigerated plate. The garment may then be creased, a silicone solution being sprayed on the back of the film to prevent adherence of the film to itself. Alternatively, adherence can be prevented by leaving the release paper until the crease has been formed. After creasing the garment is fed through an oven. Quantitative method examples are given.
