Abstract

1,247,320. Decorative articles. J. R. MORRISON. 24 April, 1970 [10 Dec., 1969], No. 19721/70. Heading B6G. Decorative articles are produced as shown in Figs. 1 and 5 by (a) providing a base having a pierceable elastic surface 13 and a penetrable yieldable interior 14, (b) providing demarcations 17 on the surface defining distinct pattern areas at least two of the demarcations being spaced apart, (c) pushing the free end 20 of a strand 11a and the strand portion immediately adjacent thereto into the base at a point on one of said two demarcations, the strand portion and end being entirely accommodated within the base interior, (d) severing the strand at a point spaced from its end embedded in the base to create a cut strand having a second free end 22, the total length of the cut strand exceeding the distance of the two demarcations, (e) pushing the second free end of the cut strand and the strand immediately adjacent into the base at a point on the other of said two demarcations, and (f) repeating steps (c)-(e) to produce a second cut strand on the base engaging the first cut strand, the ends of the second strand being pushed into the base at points on said two demarcations, respectively, adjacent to the points at which the ends of the first-mentioned strand are pushed into the base. In the embodiment the base is composed of an upper layer 13 of elastic material such as paper, metal foil, plastics foil, cloth bonded, e.g. with adhesive to a thicker layer 14 of cellular material, e.g. expanded polystyrene. Alternatively, the layer 13 may be present as an integral part of a slab or sheet of expanded polystyrene. The demarcations 17 are cuts in the layer 13 penetrating only partially through the thickness of the thin layer and the walls of the cuts converging towards layer 14. The cut strands are arranged in side-by-side relationship. Alternatively, each strand can be crossed over the previous one (Fig. 8, not shown). The surface may bear third and fourth spacedapart demarcations and steps (c)-(e) repeated with a third cut yarn strand whose end regions are pushed into the base at points on the third and fourth demarcations respectively, the third strand crossing the first and second strands (Fig. 9, not shown). The surface may also bear indicia within the patterned areas indicating the colours of strands to be used for covering the areas, the locations at which colours are to be changed, and the direction in which the strands of yarns should be placed.
