Abstract
1,247,282. Making composite articles; coil spirals. E. KANDA. 3 Sept., 1969 [3 Sept., 1968], No. 43684/69. Headings B3A and B3E. A multi-layered composite is formed by inserting a coil 7 formed by a laminated strip 6 into a sheath 8 having an inner diameter substantially equal to the coil diameter and reducing the diameter of the assembly, e.g. by drawing, extrusion or rolling. The sheath may be subsequently removed. In an example, a Pb-Al-Sn composite is rolled to form strip 6 of 0À1 mm. thickness, which is coiled into a coil 7 by rotating rollers 4. The diameter of the coil 7 is determined by one of the roller bearings 3, acted upon by a spring 5, engaging a bolt 2. The coil 7 is inserted in a copper or aluminium sheath 8 sealed at both ends by plugs 9, 10 and the sheath drawn from 15 mm. diameter to 8 mm. diameter. Part of the sheath is further drawn into wire having a diameter of 0À19 mm. and a layer 6 thickness of about 140 Š and the other part rolled into strip of 0À06 mm. thickness. In other examples, the composite strip 6 comprises Al-Pb, Al-Nb-Al, Pb-Al-Pb having oxide and silicon grease coats, and Pb-Al-Sn-Al-Pb which is folded and rolled a plurality of times to form a strip 6 having a plurality of layers. A tubular assembly wherein the coil 7 is positioned on an inner sheath may be worked using a die and mandrel. The composite material may be used as a superconductor or a high frequency magnetic material.
