Abstract

1,247,227. Ratchet clutches. H. M. HOBSON Ltd. 1 July, 1970 [2 April, 1969], No. 17341/69. Heading F2C. In a ratchet clutch for transmitting drive in both directions and overrunning in both directions wherein rollers 1 carried by an intermediate member 4 wedge between cam recesses (19) in a driving race 5 and a cylindrical outer driven race 10, the intermediate member 4 carries friction plungers 7, 8 urged radially outward by springs 17, 18 into engagement with a fixed ring 9 and the driven race 10. The intermediate member 4 is connected by spring pins 3 to the driving race 5. During initial rotation of the driving race 5 the friction plungers 7, 8 hold the intermediate member 4 and rollers 1 against rotation whereupon the rollers 1 ride up the cam surfaces of the recesses (19) into wedging engagement with the driven race 10. The springs 3 being weaker than the frictional force to permit this action. On overrun the friction plunger 8 tends to rotate the intermediate member 4 whilst the plunger 7 tends to hold the intermediate member and these opposite forces tend to cancel and permit the springs 3 to centre the intermediate member relative to the inner race 5 for clutch disengagement.
