Abstract

A display device comprises an array of light sources each with electric bi-stable switching means 18 connected to row and column conductors of a matrix 16 and operated by energizing the row and column conductors; means for energizing the conductors including first and second groups 6, 7 of sensors 4 associated with the row and column conductors; means 15 for moving in a predetermined direction a programme bearing carrier 1 past the sensors to selectively activate the sensors and energize row and column conductors. Each light source comprises a red and a green incandescent lamp operated by a pair of bi-stable relays connected via rectifiers to the row and column conductors. To operate the pairs of relays there are four conductors in each row. The sources may form an orthogonal polar or circular array or may be arranged about a cylinder. The carrier actuates in addition to the sensor groups 6, 7 selected sensors in another group 5 to determine the colour. The signals from the sensors pass through amplifiers 17, those from group 7 pass to the column conductors, those from groups 5, 6 to four groups of AND gates 10. . . 13 and determine which conductors are energized. Additional sensors in group 5 control the speed of motor 15 moving the carrier and actuate switches 8, 9 each applying power to lamps in one half of the array. Sensors in group 6 are connected to its amplifier via an inverter 14 controlled by another sensor in group 5 allowing a negative of a pattern to be produced.
