Abstract
1,246,922. Zinc-air accumulator. KOMBINAT VEB. GALVANISCHE ELEMENTE. 4 June, 1969, No. 28163/69. Heading H1B. The formation of zinc dendrites and short circuits are prevented in an alkaline zinc-air accumulator by providing a zinc-oxide-free alkaline or neutral salt electrolyte for use during charging, and a second, separate alkaline electrolyte saturated with zinc oxide for use during discharge. Chambers separate from the electrode chamber are provided for each electrolyte and are connected to the electrode chamber by closable openings or communicating tubes. For the transfer of the electrolytes, the electrolyte and electrode chambers may be provided with air inlets and/or vacuum connections for the introduction of compressed air or for producing a subatmospheric pressure, respectively. The transfer can also be effected by the use of auxiliary electrodes in the chambers which serve to decompose water and to produce an excess pressure.
