Abstract

1,246,714. Photoelectric readers. EDOUARD DUBIED & CIE S.A. 20 May, 1969 [21 May, 1968], No. 25764/69. Heading G4M. [Also in Division G1] Photo-electric reading apparatus for reading information contained in zones arranged in parallel rows on a medium 8, comprises a photocell 13 for each row on one side of the medium and on the other side, a light source 1, a condenser lens 4 and for each cell, a lens 7 arranged to produce a point image on the medium. The cells 13 and lenses 7 are arranged in a honeycomb like grid, as in Fig. 3, with each photocell area centred on its respective row 82 of zones. This arrangement allows the reading of many more items of information than a simple linear array of photo-cells. The medium may be 35 mm. photographic film, the presence or absence of an item of information, being represented by the degree of contrast of a zone with the background (transparency of the film). Also, punched tape may be read. The medium may be fixed or moving. The light source may be a lamp, as shown, having a minimally laterally extending filament, so that a point image can be obtained, or a pulsed discharge lamp. The detectors are photoresistive cells. If an electroluminescent device (e.g. gallium arsenide diode), emitting infra-red, is used, silicon photodiode detectors may be used.
