Abstract
1,246,543. Making electrical connections. AMP Inc. 22 Dec., 1969 [29 Jan., 1969; 19 May, 1969], Nos. 5053/69 and 25400/69. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] A method of terminating a length of each of a plurality of wires 4 for a flanged coil bobbin 3 having a plurality of grooves opening at an edge of the flange 2, a terminal 1 of channel shaped cross-section defining a mouth being secured in each groove with the mouth directed towards the groove openings and having integral resilient gripping means 8 for gripping the wire end portions, comprises moving the wire end portions transversely of the wire axis into engagement with the gripping means and soldering them to the terminals. The wire is preferably covered with insulation which decomposes at a temperature lower than that of soldering or alternatively a heat resistant insulation may be used. Each terminal is inserted into its groove until shoulder portions 7 abut the flange and the portion of the terminal protruding beyond the flange is peened over, Fig. 2 (not shown). When the terminals have been secured to the flange the bobbin is then wound and the ends of the wires are moved between a wall 6 and the free end of a resilient finger 8 until they reach the base of each terminal. Excess wire is cut off against cutting edges 9. Alternatively one wire end may be secured in a terminal, the coil wound and then the other end secured in another terminal. The wire ends are then soldered to their terminals by dip or flow soldering. In an alternative form, the terminal is provided with two gripping means comprising spring legs (15), (15<SP>1</SP>), rolled inwardly from the side walls of the terminal, Fig. 5 (not shown), and the excess wire is cut off against the free end of the terminal. The wire end portions may be soldered to their terminals either before or after the terminals are inserted in a printed circuit board. It is preferred to solder by dip-soldering before insertion. When the terminals are inserted in the board before soldering, the wire end portions, terminals and the board conductive paths are preferably connected by flow soldering.
