Abstract

1,246,255. Vehicle splash preventors. DAIMLER BENZ A.G. 23 Jan., 1970 [25 Jan., 1969; 9 April, 1969], No. 3331/70. Heading B7J. A device to prevent heavy fouling of the sides of vehicles comprises an air-guide device 4a, Fig. 2, mounted on the underside 1 of a vehicle in front of the front wheels so as to extend transversely of the vehicle and such that during forward travel a higher air pressure is built up in front of the device than behind it. In an alternative embodiment a further device is mounted in front of the rear wheels. The resultant pressure gradient causes air to flow from outside the vehicle, through the wheel casings and underneath the vehicle, thus opposing the normal flow of air from underneath the vehicle outwards which carries dust and dirt which is subsequently deposited on the vehicle sides. The device shown extends substantially the whole width of the vehicle and is straight. In an alternative embodiment the device is curved, the concavity facing in the direction of travel, Fig. 3 (not shown); in the further embodiments the device comprises two straight parts extending obliquely rearwardly from the sides of the vehicle, the said parts either meeting in the central longitudinal vertical plane of the vehicle or being joined by a transverse middle part, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). In all embodiments the device has a substantially vertical front surface, also it may be strengthened along its lower edge by a steel strip 9 and may be resiliently braced. As shown in Fig. 8, leaf springs 6 extend substantially the height of the device, are connected to the device by straps 8 mounted on the device and are spaced along its length. The springs are secured at their upper ends between two members having rounded edges 10 and to the underside of the vehicle. The device may be made of sheet metal or an elastic material, e.g. rubber, and may be provided with perforations to allow the passage of a limited amount of air through it.
