Abstract

1,245,990. Separating trioxane. PERSTORP AB. 20 Dec., 1968, No. 60746/68. Addition to 1,150,607. Heading C2C. Trioxane is separated from a gaseous mixture of trioxane and formaldehyde which may contain a diluent gas by contacting the gaseous mixture with a liquid phase comprising (a) an alcohol and an alcohol semiformal or (b) a polyol semiformal still containing some of the original alcoholic hydroxy groups to absorb the formaldehyde leaving the trioxane in the gaseous phase. Contacting may be effected in one or a series of stirred vessels or countercurrent absorption columns. In a particular embodiment the gaseous mixture is contacted countercurrently with said liquid phase in a first, bubble cap, column, the gaseous effluent being passed into a series of two packed columns in which it is extracted with water, the resulting aqueous effluent being fed to the first column in countercurrent to the gaseous mixture along with said liquid phase, and the trioxan removed as gaseous effluent from the second packed column.
