Abstract

1,245,968. Differentially reinforced hose. UNIROYAL Ltd. 27 Aug., 1969 [6 June, 1968], No. 26998/68. Heading F2P. A hose for suction and discharge of oil is differentially reinforced from one end to the other by plies, the number of plies being reduced at spaced intervals from the substantially rigid end 1 of the hose towards the relatively flexible end. The core 3 of the embodiment shown is built in the usual way on a mandrel and may incorporate wire cord to give the necessary burst pressure requirements. Four plies 4-7 of bias cut rayon breaker fabric are then applied, each ply being shorter than the underlying ply, and an intermediate body portion 8 is made up of rubber stock and straight cut fabric ply. The hose is then semi-cured off the mandrel in a nylon wrapper and then replaced on the mandrel for completion. After a layer of cement and rubber stock, which completes the body layer 8, a helical wire reinforcement is wound on, the spacing of the turns being increased (e.g. in stages) towards the more flexible end, the gaps between turns being filled by strips 11-13 of increasing width. A further rubber stock layer 14 is applied followed by further reinforcing plies 15-18, the longest being shorter than ply 7. The final body layer 19 is built up of rubber stock and breaker fabric and is formed to give the hose a smooth taper. Finally the hose is vulcanized. Alternative forms of reinforcement may be used, e.g. sheet metal, metal strips, rope or cord.
