Abstract

The rapid action pipe coupling utilises a telescopic spigot and socket type connection, a radially inflatable sleeve (12) being incorporated in the annular gap between the spigot (10) barrel and the socket bore. The sleeve is of supple material with two layers of embedded reinforcement, and its axially opposed end zones are both fixed to either the spigot or the socket, fluid under pressure being introduced into the enclosed volume to efect inflation and secure the connection. The reinforcing layers (15, 16) sandwich a layer of rubber (19), are fixed at axially opposed sleeve ends only, and overlap in the longitudinal sense, the arrangement preventing the sleeve from rolling under axial forces.
