Abstract

1,245,937. Treating textiles. SOLAR LABORATORIES Inc. 23 Oct., 1968, No. 50368/ 68. Heading D1P. [Also in Division A5] Orthopedic device, such as a cast or brace, is formed by enclosing the relevant body member of the patient's body in a fabric impregnated with an ultraviolet radiation curable organic material, which fabric is substantially free of excess liquid, and curing the material by exposure to ultraviolet irradiation to form a hard device. The fabric may be in the form of a bandage strip made of cotton, nylon or of fibreglass and is wrapped around the body member over a stockinette and or plastics material wrap which is removed after curing. The curing may be affected at room temperature by exposure to sunlight or using an unltraviolet lamp. The organic material may be a resin comprising an unsaturated polyester, a terminally ethelenically unsaturated monomer such as styrene, methyl methacrylate or triallyl cyanurate and a photoinitiator such as benzoin, ozobioisobutyronitrile, 2,2' dihydroxy-4,4' dimethoxybenzophenone or 2,4 dihydroxybenzophenone. Alternatively the organic material may be a methacrylate polymer dissolved in a monomeric methacrylate containing a photoinitiator.
