Abstract

124,584. Falconer, W. W. P. March 28, 1918. Clinometers. - Gravityactuated clinometers are described in connexion with the measurement of the flexing of the human joints, for which purpose they are adapted to be worn upon a limb. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a spindle b mounted in a casing a carries at the front end a fixed pointer f. A flanged dial c is mounted loosely at this end of the spindle and is graduated in degrees. It is clamped to the casing by a setscrew e which admits of adjusting the zero. The pointer f is held vertically by a weighted arm g attached either pivotally or otherwise to the spindle b. The casing is furnished with a strap for securing to a limb, and as the limb is flexed about its joint the dial moves with the limb, and the reading of the pointer affords an index of the extent of the movement. A double pointer l friction-tight on the spindle may be pushed around by engagement of the pointer f with a pin m to mark the reading on the dial. The pointer l is double to admit of movement to right or left, the one in use being first alined with the pointer f. Other forms are described for use with fingers in which a weighted graduated cylinder or quadrant is used, and supported on the finger by a spring clip. Liquid may be used inside an instrument with a graduated glass cover, or a weighted pendulum may rotate through gear wheels a dial inside a casing, the reading being viewed through a hole in the case.
