Abstract

1,245,824. Polarizing apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov.27, 1968 [Nov. 30, 1967], No. 56278/68. Heading G2J. An optical deflection system relating to digital deflection in one or two dimensions includes an alternate series of single birefringent prisms 4, 5, 6, and polarizers 1, 1<SP>1</SP> 1<SP>11</SP> in which the refracting angle of the prism 6 having the greatest refracting angle 4γ points in a direction opposite to that in which the other prisms point. In the embodiment shown the polarizing switches 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, 1<SP>11</SP> may be Kerr cells or quarter wave plates and the axis of symmetry sym of the totality of all possible directions of emergence corresponds to the axis Sy of the system and the position of the axis of symmetry relative to the system is independent of its temperature. An isotropic prism 3 may be inserted which reduces the very small angular deviation and whose refracting angle γ and temperature coefficient of the refractive index is substantially equal to those of prism 4. In embodiments where all the prisms have the same orientation of optic axis, the optic axis of the inverted prism 6 is rotated through 90 degrees relative to the other prisms. In a further embodiment the final prism is made compound consisting of two prisms one of which is inverted.
