Abstract

1,245,714. Plate vibrators. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 30 Oct., 1969, No. 53192/69. Heading G5J. [Also in Divisions H1 and H3-H5] A tone generator, e.g. for use in a telephone dialling system, comprises an electrically sustained vibratory reed 3 formed in part out of or mounted on a leaf spring 1, the vibration of the reed being normally suppressed by a damper 10 held in contact with the reed but excited when the leaf spring is snapped from one bowed state to another to remove the reed from the damper. In Fig. 2a, the leaf spring is snapped over by means of a push-button 9 acting on the spring via a resilient linkage 11; a return spring 8 acts in the opposite direction. In Fig. 3, integral portions 12, 13 and 14, 15 of the leaf spring perform respectively the functions of a return spring and a resilient linkage. A five-layer piezo-electric element, of which the vibratory reed tongue constitutes the central layer, has inner layers adjacent the reed tongue comprising lead zirconate titanate bonded to the tongue and outer metal layers forming the electrodes. Alternatively, in a seven-layer structure a metal-piezo-electric ceramic-metal sandwich may be bunded to each side of the reed tongue. The outer electrode layers are of graded composition varying from a Ni-Cr alloy to gold with the alloy adjacent the ceramic to enable the making of soldered connections. The transistor oscillator circuit by which the vibration of the reed is sustained comprises a two-transistor amplifier network, Fig. 4 (not shown), with integrating circuits (R1, C1 and R2, C2) ensuring adequate phase-shift in the feedback loop and also serving to suppress overtone frequencies. An additional emitterfollower stage may be included, Fig. 5 (not shown). A telephone dialling system may include two assemblies of tone generators, each assembly corresponding to a high frequency or a low frequency band having four reeds, the reeds in each assembly being connected in parallel in a common amplifier circuit.
