Abstract

A hole forming device comprises a pipe 1 which is vibrated into the earth to a predetermined depth, whereupon fluid is introduced through a conduit 3, inlets 2 and non- return valves 13 to remove the earth core from the pipe as a solid mass. The fluid pressure may be gradually reduced so that the core moves at a constant rate. The column is cut into sections and removed by truck. or conveyer. A suspension of bentonite may be supplied through the conduits to lubricate the pipe as it is vibrated into the earth, the pressure of the suspension being increased to remove the core. When boring permeable earth a sealing layer is formed in the lower end of the pipe above the inlets. This layer may be formed by injecting a chemical hardening medium, an emulsion or sheet like sealing elements such as polyvinylchloride sheets in a carrier liquid. In a modification, a cutting member is operable from the top of the pipe to sever the core at the level of the inlets. The pipe may have a round or rectangular cross section. To form a waterproof retaining wall a round pipe 22 is vibrated into the ground and the core removed. A second pipe 23 having rectangular section is introduced adjacent the pipe 22, Fig. 4, and the core removed. A reinforcement is arranged in the pipe 22 and concrete is poured in. The pipe 22 is removed and vibrated into the ground at the far end of the pipe 23. The pipe 23 is filled with concrete in a similar manner and removed to allow merging with the concrete in the cylindrical hole to form a waterproof joint. This procedure is repeated to give a zig-zag wall, Fig. 7 (not shown).
