1,245,236. Tubular heat exchangers. JOHN THOMPSON WATER TUBE BOILERS Ltd. 26 Nov., 1968 [28 Nov., 1967], No. 54135/67. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger shell 12 is closed at one end by an assembly comprising inlet and outlet manifold elements 14, 15 to which tubes 18 extending within the shell are connected, a seal 35 between the manifold elements and permitting differential thermal movement between them, and a bridge 21 secured to the shell and adapted to resist movement of at least one of the manifolds away from the shell. As shown, the manifold elements 14, 15 are annular, the outer manifold 14 supporting by a lip 30 the inner manifold 15. Inlet and outlet channels 26, 27 are formed respectively in the manifolds for the tube side fluid. The manifold element 14 is secured by bolts 29A to the shell rim 23 to which also the bridge 21 is secured by bolts 22. Pads 40 are interposed between the bridge 21 and manifold 15 whereby movement of this manifold away from the shell is resisted by the bridge. The shell side fluid enters at 16 and leaves at 17, the shell also having a vent pipe 28 discharging to atmosphere through a pressure relief valve (not shown). The seal 35 (shown in detail in Fig. 2) resists internal pressure from the shell and accommodates radial movements of the manifolds, any tendency for axial movement of the manifolds being resisted by the pads 40.
