Abstract

1,245,201. Linear motors. SERETE. 23 Jan., 1970 [23 Jan., 1969], No. 3352/70. Heading H2A. In a linear induction motor comprising at least one wound inductor, the magnetic circuits of the inductor or inductors are located on opposite sides of and inclined to a plane perpendicular to the plane of the air gap and parallel to the direction of relative movement of the inductor and an armature, whereby the inductor field tends to centre the armature with respect to the inductor as well as produce relative motion. Fig. 2 shows one embodiment in which the laminations of the inductor 8 are stacked to form teeth 9 of herring-bone shape. The arrow 13 shows the direction of the resultant forces produced on armature 10 by the winding portions on either side of the apices 9a of the herring-bone teeth. Alternatively, Fig. 4, two inductors 14, 15 with linear teeth may lie inclined at an angle α to the centre line of the armature. Several pairs of such inductors may be located in line adjacent to each other, Fig. 5 (not shown). The armature 10 which comprises a plate 11 of conducting material and a superimposed plate 12 of magnetic material, may be continuous or formed of short sections.
