Abstract

1,245,101. Mounting resistance elements in furnaces. THERMAL SYNDICATE Ltd. 31 Jan., 1969 [2 Feb., 1968], No. 5418/68. Heading H5H. A plurality of heating elements 3 are individually slidably supported against a conducting block 5 at opposite sides of the heating chamber 2 of a furnace, each block 5 being electrically insulated from adjacent blocks and having its own current supply connection 6, and the current transmitting mating surfaces of each element 3 and the pair of blocks 5 therefor being provided with serrations parallel to the sliding direction of the element. Damaged elements 3 are replaceable without switching off the main power supply to the surface, the end pieces 4 of each element 3 having a projection (not shown) engageable by an insulated extractor tool. Spring- loaded rollers or other pressure devices act on the top surfaces of the end pieces 4 to increase contact pressure between piece 4 and block 5. Current is fed from a main bus bar 8 via a hollow lead 7 to the water-cooled metal connector 6, the cooling water exiting via a pipe 9 and drain 10. The elements 3, with or without end pieces 4, and the support blocks 5 are of graphite, carbonaceous material or other conducting material.
