A liquid fuel burner comprising a combustion pot 11 with perforate side walls, and an elongate trough 20 disposed in the lower portion 13 thereof and connected to a supply of fuel via a feedpipe 16 and a constant level feed-valve for preventing overflow of the fuel from the trough, is provided with an access passage 14 which is generally aligned with the longitudinal axis of the trough and extends through the side of the pot to terminate in an opening normally sealed by a cover 15 but which, when open, permits substantially straight line access along the entire length of the trough for removing debris therefrom. The trough may be a cavity formed in the base of the pot, Figs 1-3 (not shown) or a separate stainless steel element spaced from the base, as shown. The bottom of the trough may be stepped so as to lie at at least two different levels, Fig. 10 (not shown), and may have an oblique V-shaped lateral cross-section. An access passage 17 for ignition is provided, and the pot is disposed within a jacket 10 having a door 9 aligned with the pipe 4. An inverted dished deflector above the trough has a circular row of air feed holes and defines a peripheral flow passage with the side of the pot, Fig. 9 (not shown). In another embodiment, Figs. 11-14 (not shown), the access pipe is closed by a hinged door above the fuel level and a shoot of fine mesh wire netting is disposed in the pipe to act as an igniting wick.
