1,244,988. Solution polymerization process. ORGANSKO HEMIJSKA INDUSTRIJA NAUM NAUMOVSKI BORCE. 10 Sept., 1968 [11 Dec., 1967 (2)], No. 43073/68. Heading C3P. A vinyl or vinylidene monomer is polymerized in solution in the presence of a free radical-forming initiator and of one or more salts of ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid, diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid and salts thereof, or cyclohexanediamine-1,2-tetra-acetic acid. and salts thereof, the polymerization solvent being dimethylformamide, dimethylsulphoxide or an aqueous solution of sodium thiocyanate. Specified monomers are acrylonitrile, acrylic and methacrylic acids and esters thereof, vinyl acetate, styrene and itaconic acid. Suitable initiators are potassium persulphate and azodiisobutyronitrile, which is used in the examples. In Examples 1 and 2, acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate are copolymerized in (1) dimethyl formamide containing the barium salt of ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid, or (2) dimethylsulphoxide containing the cadmium salt of diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid. In Examples 3 and 4, acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate and itaconic acid are copolymerized in aqueous sodium thiocyanate solution containing (3) the cobaltous salt of cyclohexanediamine- 1,2-tetra-acetic acid, or (4) the disodium salt of ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid, ferric chloride and thiocarbamide dioxide, the pH of the aqueous solution being adjusted to 5 in both examples.
