Abstract

1,244,728. Valves. DRUM ENG. CO. Ltd. 19 Nov., 1968 [22 Dec., 1967], No. 58389/67. Heading F2V. A rotary plug valve comprises a body 1 having a cylindrical valve chamber 2, and first and second ports 3, 4 aligned on opposite sides of the axis together with third and fourth ports 5, 6 spaced axially and located angularly between the ports 3, 4. The valve member comprises axially spaced plugs 9, 10 which seal the opposite ends of the chamber, and a barrier 11 which extends between opposite axial extremities of the first and second ports 3, 4. The barrier 11 is connected at its ends to the plugs 9, 10 by connecting bars 13, 14 of smaller circumferential extent and smaller superficial area, and is also connected intermediate the ends thereof to the plugs through bifurcated webs 15, 16 of greater circumferential extent and greater superficial area with the object of balancing the radial pressure forces which provide flow ports 19 between the bifurcations. The ports 3, 4 are connectible alternately to the ports 5, 6 by rotation of the valve member through 180 degrees, or in an intermediate position all these ports are connected. Each web is provided with a pressure-equalizing groove 21 which extends as shown to the space on the opposite side axially of the barrier 11. The valve is operated by a handle 26.
