Abstract
1,244,351. Cross-linking polymers. DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd. 12 Sept., 1969 [14 Sept., 1968], No. 43818/68. Headings C3G and C3P. A polymer is lithiated by reacting with a tertiary amine complex of an organo-lithium compound and is then cross-linked by being exposed to oxidizing conditions. Suitable oxidizing conditions are air, oxygen and ceric ammonium nitrate. Exemplified polymers are polybutadiene, ethylene propylene terpolymer, styrene-butadiene block polymer, styrene-butadiene graft polymer, polystyrene, styrenebutadiene copolymer, polyisoprene and mixtures of polyisoprene and styrene-butadiene copolymer. In a modification polyisoprene was grafted with styrene after lithiation and then reacted with oxygen. To make threads, a solution of the polymer is lithiated then extruded into air.
