Abstract
1,244,005. Graft polymers. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 4 Nov., 1968 [2 Nov., 1967], No. 52207/68. Headings C3G and C3P. A graft polymer consists of (a) an oxymethylene copolymer, which is alkali stable or can be stabilized with alkali, of trioxane or formaldehyde with 0À1 to 50% by weight of a comonomer free from saponifiable groups, and (b) polyvinyl alcohol or a copolymer of vinyl alcohol with an olefin, which copolymer is obtained by saponification of a copolymer of vinyl acetate with 0À1 to 50% by weight of an olefin. The graft polymer is produced by saponification in the presence of a strong alkali in a mixture of a watersoluble organic solvent and water at a temperature in the range 40‹ to 200‹ C., and a pressure in the range of atmospheric pressure to 50 atmospheres of a graft polymer of copolymer (a) and polymer (b). The graft polymer which is saponified is prepared by (i) grafting vinyl acetate or vinyl acetate and an olefin on to copolymer (a) using a free radical initiator, (ii) grafting trioxane or formaldehyde and a comonomer on to polyvinyl acetate or. a vinyl acetate-olefin copolymer using a cationic initiator or (iii) kneading copolymer (a) with polyvinyl acetate or a vinyl acetate-olefin copolymer in the presence of a free radical initiator. In Examples 1 and 2, vinyl acetate is grafted on to a trioxanedioxolane copolymer, the graft copolymer being saponified in aqueous methanol containing NaOH or aqueous dioxane containing KOH. The graft polymer produced in Example 3 by grafting vinyl acetate on to a trioxane ethylene oxide copolymer is saponified in aqueous methanol containing sodium acetate. In Examples 4 and 6, trioxane and 1,3,6-trioxacyclooctane are grafted on to polyvinyl acetate or a vinyl acetate ethylene copolymer using pnitrophenyl-diazonium fluoborate as initiator, the resulting graft polymer being saponified in aqueous methanol containing borax. A copolymer of trioxane and ethylene oxide is kneaded in Example 5 at 200‹ C. with polyvinyl acetate in the presence of dicumyl peroxide to produce a graft polymer which is saponified in aqueous dimethyl formamide containing NaOH.
